20. Mariah Carey – We Belong Together

Year: 2005

Album: The Emancipation of Mimi

After staying at number one for fourteen non-consecutive weeks, the song became the second longest running number one song in US chart history.



19. Everclear – Wonderful

Year: 2000

Album: Songs from an American Movie, Vol. 1: Learning How to Smile

“Wonderful” was a huge hit in the USA, being featured on countless television shows. It reached #1 in Canada and was #3 on the modern rock charts in the USA.


18. Maroon 5 – This Love

Year: 2004

Album: Songs About Jane

“This Love” hit #1 on many charts and was met with controversy regarding extended intimate scenes between Levine and his then-girlfriend in the music video.


17. Coldplay – Viva La Vida

Year: 2008

Album: Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends

“Viva La Vida” became only the sixth song in digital history to reach the 4 million mark in paid downloads.



16. Lifehouse – Hanging By A Moment

Year: 2001

Album:  No Name Face

Despite not going to number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, “Hanging” still finished as the top song on the chart for the year 2001.


15. Eminem – Lose Yourself 

Year: 2002

Album: Music from and Inspired by the Motion Picture 8 Mile

“Lose Yourself” became the first rap song to win The Academy Award for Best Original Song.


14. The Killers – Mr. Brightside

Year: 2004

Album:  Hot Fuss

“Mr. Brightside” was named “Song of the Decade” by UK radio stations Absolute Radio and XFM.


13. The Calling – Wherever You Will Go

Year: 2001

Album: Camino Palmero

“Wherever You Will Go” topped the Adult Top 40 for 23 weeks, the second longest running number one in the chart’s history.


12. Snow Patrol – Chasing Cars

Year: 2006

Album: Eyes Open

In 2009, the PPL announced “Chasing Cars” was the most widely played song of the decade in the UK.


11. Switchfoot – Dare You To Move

Year: 2004

Album: The Beautiful Letdown

“Dare You To Move” won two Dove Awards: Rock/Contemporary Recorded Song of the Year and Short Form Music Video of the Year.



10. 30 Seconds To Mars – Kings and Queens

Year: 2009

Album: This Is War

“Kings and Queens” was honored as the best single of 2009 by Rock Sound.


9. Matchbox Twenty – Unwell

Year: 2003

Album:  More Than You Think You Are

“Unwell” spent 20 weeks at the top of the U.S. Billboard Adult Top 40 chart.


8.  The Fray – How To Save A Life

Year: 2004

Album: How to Save a Life

“How To Save a Life” topped the Adult Top 40 chart for 15 consecutive weeks and was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal


7. Avril Lavigne – Complicated

Year: 2002

Album: Let Go

“Complicated” held the number one spot on the Adult Top 40 chart for sixteen weeks in a row and was nominated for two Grammy Awards for Song of the Year and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance.


6.  Leona Lewis – Bleeding Love

Year: 2007

Album: Spirit

“Bleeding Love” was the best selling digital song of 2008 and is in the top 5 selling songs of the decade.


5.  Linkin Park – In The End 

Year: 2001

Album: Hybrid Theory

“In The End” is Billboard’s second most played rock song of the decade.


4. Jimmy Eat World – The Middle

Year: 2001

Album: Bleed American

Following the September 11, 2001 attacks, Jimmy Eat World’s album title was changed to a self-titled album and the lead single failed to win much airplay, thus the success of the band was riding on the next single.  “The Middle” broke through and became #1 hit on the U.S. Billboard Hot Modern Rock chart.



3.  Maroon 5 – She Will Be Loved

Year: 2004

Album: Songs About Jane

Maroon 5 hit #1 in multiple countries with “She Will Be Loved”, selling almost 3 million copies.



2. Train – Drops Of Jupiter

Year: 2001

Album: Drops of Jupiter

“Drops of Jupiter” was nominated for 5 Grammy Awards, including Song of the YearRecord of the Year and Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal, and won 2 for “Best Rock Song” and “Best Instrumental Arrangement Accompanying Vocalist(s)

1. U2 – Beautiful Day

Year: 2000

Album: All That You Can’t Leave Behind

In 2001, “Beautiful Day” won three Grammy Awards for Song of the YearRecord of the Year, and Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal. Readers of Rolling Stone ranked it as the third-best single of the 2000s.
